Carlos Sainz Sr. was born on April 12, 1962, in Madrid, Spain. He began his racing career in motocross at the age of 17 before switching to rallying. He made his World Rally Championship debut in the 1987 Monte Carlo Rally driving a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth. In 1990, he won his first WRC event, the Acropolis Rally, and went on to win the WRC championship in 1990 and 1992. He also won the Dakar Rally twice, in 2010 and 2018. Sainz retired from competitive rallying in 2005 but continued to make occasional appearances in the Dakar Rally and other events. He is considered one of the greatest rally drivers of all time.
